Lord Of The Flies Rhetorical Analysis - 1142 Words

â€Å"There is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.† (The Bible, Prov. 16:25). Thoughts that come to men stem from their participation in society or their natural state of good and evil. However, society’s morals mask the natural man—who is more vulnerable to natural evil than good. Because of this, every man is susceptible to ignorance and savagery. William Golding exemplifies this idea in his novel Lord of the Flies. When a group of military boys find themselves stranded on a deserted island, their ignorance soon leads to the inevitable savagery present in the end of the novel. The maturation process of Ralph illustrates the fight between man’s tendencies of natural evil and natural good when morals†¦show more content†¦At the time, Ralph heavily influences the boys and their actions for he resembles â€Å"the men with the megaphones† (18). He attempts to create order among the boys with rules, but most of the boys would rather play than follow the rules—for there are no adults to enforce them. With the role of leadership thrust upon him, Ralph has no choice but to stop playing games. His goals are to protect the boys and increase their chances of being rescued; however, the responsibility on Ralph’s shoulders soon begins to weigh him down. As â€Å"Ralph [watches the boys], envious and resentful† (75), the obligation to care for everyone on the island is a heavy burden to bear. His role as leader has forced Ralph to forget the joys of being an innocent kid and given him the encumbrance of responsibility, which causes the start of his maturation. As the order on the island begins to break down, Ralph tightly holds onto the idea of rescue. On the island, every responsibility is on his shoulders and will be until they leave. As he ponders his feelings, â€Å"he [loses] himself in a maze of thoughts that were rendered vague by his lack of words to express them† (76). Daydreaming about home expresses his longing for civilized life and comfort; remaining in a state of innocence. However, he has matured a great deal since the beginning of the novel. Answer: Introduction: More than its commercial success that fetched the producer cum director an enormous profit of 17,915, what accounted for the uniqueness of Jedda, is that the movie was the first movie of its kind to cast the Aboriginal actors in the lead roles (Lucas 2015). The most unique aspect of the movie was that Ngarla Kunoth playing the titular character has been shown neither as a woman getting oppressed by the White Europeans, nor is found to assimilate the European perceptions of the world. Rather this movie shows the less represented theme of an African woman being trapped between the world of tribal instincts and the world that demands assimilation. The movie Jedda was the last feature film of the director Charles Chauvel, and the director was well-aware that the movie might not be a major hit at the box office, given that it had two Australia actors- Ngarla Kunoth and Robert Tudawali in the lead, and yet his apprehension was proved to be wrong. The very reason why the movie has assumed a significant position in the lexicon of Australian movie history is that Jedda was the first Australia directed color film and that created the much needed hype for the movie. The next factor cementing the seminal place of the movie in the Australian film industry is that it was also the first movie that was being invited at the Cannes Film Festival. Jedda is apparently a movie that delineates a simple yet tragic tale of a young Aboriginal girl, Jedda who was being brought up by a White woman, Sarah who tries her best to seclude and extricate poor Jedda from the customs and traditions of her communities. However, as Freud and Jung would say, the basic traits of a person continue to stay in the subconscious, and Jedda realizes her subconscious desire for Marbuk once he arrives at the station. However, the movie is merely a tragic tale with a predictable sequence of events, with the only probable shock coming at the end, when the couple decides to choose death over the social criticism. The storyline is very plain, simple and predictable from the beginning, with very few surprising elements. However, what actually keeps the readers attention engaged is the dramatic element inherent in the story where the titular protagonist is being torn between a refined, piano-playing British gentleman and her indomitable attraction towards a ful l-blood Aboriginal, regarded as the savage in the movie. The powerful melodrama of the narrative was being brought strongly by each of the actors, and special mention must be made of Kunoth (Rayner 2016). Though Kunoth does steal the limelight with her powerful performance in the movie, it is important to note that the professional expertise of Kunoth was not as commendable as the way Chauvel directed the movie to utilize and capture her natural ability. Needless to say, Robert has also emerged as a powerful screen personality in the movie. More than possessing professional expertise, the Aboriginal actors of the period required no special, gifted talent to perform their roles, as they while acting in movies like Jedda during the 1970s were revisiting their past experiences only (Stadler et al. 2014). Another very attractive feature of the movie that at once strikes the reader is its color photography, which is during most of the times highly magnificent, with its rich panorama reaching beyond the conventional standards of Hollywood. However, setting aside the acting skills of the protagonists and the brilliant cinematography, what actually delights the audience is the commendable handling of the Aborigines by the Director. In fact, the credit indeed redounds to Chauvel for having artistically handled each of the Aborigine actors, by transposing their feelings onto the celluloid in a way that is appealing to any movie-goer of the time. Some of the characters have also been brilliantly portrayed in the movie, for instance the character of Marbuck, who with the help of his magnetic physical presence as well as his sexuality solely dominates the screen since the time he appears on screen. However, one thing that make the movie lose its appeal in the present day, is its derogatory att itude towards the Aboriginals. Throughout the movie, if a reader carefully observes the dialogues, he will be able to perceive that cleanliness and purity have always been associated with the idea of a White man, while negative attributes such as dirt or disruption are embodied by the Aborigines (Starrs 2016). However, though such a movie involving outright racial indignation might just repulse the audience of the present decade, what can still hold the attention of the audience is the sensational content, as the movie consists of scenes where Jedda is being hunted down by the Aboriginal lover through the crocodile infested water, and further there is a crocodile knifing and battling scene as well (Hamilton 2015). To conclude, if one has to rate the movie Jedda, he can easily claim that the movie does merit a 4 star rating. Apparently dealing with the simple theme of inter-racial love, the movie actually highlights an important aspect of the life of the Aborigines- no matter how differently are they being bred and brought up, an Aboriginal person can never escape the Aboriginal instincts and passions in her life. The movie at once ennobling and dignifying the Australian North, emerges to be a good outdoor adventure, with an eye on detailing the characterization and incident. Social Construction in Human Geography Social construction in its purest form is not defined easily, the by the book definition from dictionary.com is â€Å"a social mechanism, phenomenon, or category created and developed by society; apperception of an individual, group, or idea that is constructed through cultural or social practice.† Social construction in layman’s terms is the foundation for everything everywhere you encounter in life. When a person is born and slowly learns the world surrounding them everything from what gender they are to what race they are is formed by society through social construct. Social construction is a concept that is completely created by humans, it is rather easy to make the connection why it would be such a predominant part of human geography. Since Social construction is covers such a wide array of areas, I am going to focus specifically on why it is important in human geography, and how time and space are socially constructed. Human geography, to put it simply is the study of humans. When humans come together they can form a Culture which is defined as â€Å"shared patterns of learned behavior, attitudes, and knowledge† (Human Geography 113). Culture continues to be a main factor of both human geography and social construction by being formed and created by society. Culture consists of single qualities known as culture traits. Culture traits are behaviors that are thought of and done as a normality by one region or more but not as the rest of the world. An example of a culture trait could be wearing a jersey to a sporting event, which is also seen as a result of social construct because society is the sole creator of the tradition such that should wear jerseys to sporting events. Culture is only the start of Social construction as people in these first cultures move to other regions different culture traits are developed leading to culture realms. Culture region are where society has created some of the same traits in surrounding areas, while also having differing traits of their own. An example is â€Å"In the United States, a region such as New England could be defined as the area in which many people root for the Red Sox, pronounce chowder â€Å"chowda,† and use the word wicked as an adjective for something extreme, as in â€Å"it’s wicked cold out there!†(Human Geography 113). The connection between social construction and culture was so obvious to me because neither one are limited to anything specific. The entire makeup of a person being from certain region could be created dramatically from his/her culture. All of those traits that create culture that has shaped said person is created through social construction, such as variations to language, traditions, and actions that are thought to be the norm. Since social construction is involved in all aspects of humans understanding the world around them it is easy to see why social construction is import ant to human geography. Time, how is the concept socially constructed? Social construction being â€Å"a social mechanism, phenomenon, or category created and developed by society† (Dictionary.com). The entire concept of time is created through a social mechanism by society. Time is measured in seconds, minutes, and hours, but before there were regulations placed on time society like everything else had created their own view on time. â€Å"The U.S. national time standard, for instance, didn’t emerge until 1883, when it was adopted by the railroads, which needed to maintain common timetables. Before that, cities largely kept their own local time, and many were not happy to have big government and big railroads force standardization on them. â€Å"Let the people of Cincinnati stick to the truth as it is written by the sun, moon and stars,† editorialized one newspaper when the changeover was going into effect† (Smithsonian). If time had not become regulated the differences could be substantial. There are differences in the social construct as far as culturally as well if you think in the terms of how long a work day or week would be. The United States, we think of 8 hours a day typically that is not the standard in other countries. In lecture we talked of vacation time which could also be created by society in the United States the normality is minimal, which is the opposite in much of the rest of the world. Another thought that is created by social construction is idea of being early, on time, and being late. That was created by society how do you decide if a person is on time, or early, or late. Social construction is very versatile especially in regards to the process from when humans are first born to developing cultures and venturing further to social construction of space. The social construction of space covers a vast amount of topics, the textbook defines the term as â€Å"this is the idea that society shapes the spatial nature of our world. How is the cultural landscape of your community reflective of the valves of your community† (Human Geography 125). SO I take that definition that like the other aspects of social construction, humans if moving into a new area that has not already had a community developed on it, and then humans will shape the area with cities filled with structures that are unique to the culture of people taking the land. If humans take over land that has already been developed, the people taking over will make changes to shape it and make it their own something that would represent their culture well. Once on the land society can split the land according to ideology and/or power and example â€Å"many communities in the American south have great geographic disparities between where the whites live and where blacks live.†(Human Geography 125). Southern culture have adopted that ideology. Social construction covering such an array of things it is easy to see how it is such a major party of human geography. If through humans from the beginning of their lives until they create culture and ideology where they live by, all of these things are formed by society using social construction. To go more in depth about environmental determinism I am going to focus on covering the development of environmental determinism, who was arguing for it, what values it reflected, the obvious issues with environmental determinist thought, and the downfall of environmental determinism. Even though environmental determinism is rather a new getting popular in early twentieth century, parts of the theory actually dates back to late classical era. â€Å"Climatic factors for example were used by Strabo, Plato, and Aristotle to explain why the Greeks were so much more developed in the early ages than societies in hotter and colder climates. War Creates Social Division, Not Cohesion In attempts to truthfully learn from our past and make progress towards a peaceful world with equality for all, the topic of war, and the effects of war, is an importance issue. Many people believe that war, although obviously destructive, does lead to social cohesion within the particular nation-state at war. The Senate of Canada defines social cohesion as the capacity of citizens living under different social or economic circumstances to live together in harmony, with a sense of mutual commitment. (Culturelink, par. 2) The idea that war leads to social cohesion is based upon the assumption that during a time of crisis, such as a war, people will come together out of the necessity to survive. This belief that the masses unite, neglecting prior dispositions towards one another while opposing a common enemy, has been fairly prominent throughout history. The Second World War, the Cold War, and the Gulf War will be used as examples to research the assumption that social cohesion is a re sult of warfare. I will argue that warfare, opposed to popular belief, causes large-scale discrimination, which in turn creates social division, not cohesion. Once an understanding of the discriminatory effects war causes is expressed, the backbone derived from the research is that we must valiantly oppose military action to uphold our freedom and equality for all, rather than trying to fight for freedom. Second World War The Japanese bombed the United States' Hawaiian naval base, Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 and this began what we now know as the Second World War. Carl Robins Essay This case study pertains to an employee by the name of Carl Robins. He has been employed by ABC, Inc as a Campus Recruiter for six months. In early April, during Mr. Robins first six months of employment; he successfully recruited 15 new hires. The new trainees were to report to Monica Carrolls, the Operations Supervisor, as they would be working under her. (University of Phoenix, 2014) This case study analysis of Mr. Robins is in relation to the numerous issues that transpired between April and June 15th. To obtain a clear understanding of the complications that transpired, the company believes that it would be in their best interest to consult a firm to look into the company’s issues and to help solve the problems that have emerged; this may be the most effective method to identify and recommend ways to improve ABC, Inc.’s recruiting of new trainees. I. ISSUES THAT TRANSPIRED The consulting firm came into ABC, Inc. and thoroughly examined background information on the situation. There were many key problems that had been identified during the evaluation. The issues that ABC, Inc. was facing were centered on Mr. Carl Robins, ABC, Inc.’s Campus Recruiter and also on the company ABC, Inc. To begin, Mr. Robins has been with the company merely a short six months. The consulting firm believes that Mr. Robins lacks experience, training and supervision. The firm also believes that ABC, Inc. did not train him properly nor did it provide him with the knowledge he needed to proceed properly with the hiring process. He lacked experience and knowledge of the hiring process and he was still allowed to hire 15 new  trainees for the Operations Supervisor, Monica Carrolls. Although hiring 15 new trainees is great accomplishment for a new employee, this might have been too many employees to be hired at once for a first recruitment. Because he is still new to ABC, Inc., learning about day to day operations, the hiring of 15 new trainees can be overwhelming, even to the most experienced of people. Another issue Mr. Robin’s was facing, was the lack of communication between him and the other employees in the office. On May 15th, he was contacted by Monica Carrolls about the following issues: the training schedule, orientation, manuals, policy booklets, physicals, drug tests, and a host of other issues, which Carl would coordinate for the new hires. Once again, Carl assured the Operations Supervisor, Monica Carrolls, that he would have everything completed and arranged by the June 15th orientation. After further review, Carl had realized that when going through the new trainee files to finalize all the paperwork for the June 15th orientation; applications for some of the new trainees had not been completed. Also, there were no transcripts on file and none of the 15 trainees had been sent for the mandatory drug screen. Another problem Carl had was that the orientation manuals were missing several pages from each of them and he only had three copies of the manuals. Lastly, upon checking the conference room to confirm the date of the orientation, he had not realized that the conference room had been booked for the whole month of June by the Technology Services Department. There are several concerns or issues that need to be addressed and that Carl and ABC, Inc. need to rectify. Below are the listed issues of these concerns that will be discussed. Review of addressed issues: 1. Incomplete employee applications 2. Mandatory drug screens were not scheduled 3. Employee transcripts were not on file 4. Incomplete orientation manuals 5. Shortage of orientation manuals 6. Resource scheduling conflicts II. PROBLEM SOLVING SOLUTIONS After the case review of Carl Robin’s, discussion of possible solutions available to rectify the situations at hand and the proposed solutions that Mr. Robin’s should take have been reviewed. Starting with concerns and issues, numbers one through three, the incomplete employee applications; Carl needs to contact the 15 new hires and make them aware of the absence in their records and have them complete the applications that need to be submitted to the Human Resources Department along with a transcript; they also have to complete a mandatory drug screen prior to orientation. Carl needs to set a deadline for the mandatory drug screens to be completed prior to the June 15th orientation training. On the concerns and issues, number four and five, the incomplete orientation manuals and the shortage of the orientation manuals. The orientation manuals were short by 12; Carl needs to make arrangements with company in house copy person to finish completing the orientation manuals he needs or he must contact an outside company to help rectify the need for the orientation manuals. Carl needs to have a â€Å"Main Copy Manual† made for himself or the next person that is in his position. A hard copy manual is something that should be kept on file, so that pages will not be misplaced and there will always be one on file. Carl seems to lack knowledge of ABC, Inc.’s policies and procedures. He must get to know the material in the company’s orientation manual prior to the July orientation. Reading over the material prior to the orientation and also going over what he will be saying to the new hires with his own supervisor or another staff member might be a good way to go about this. Mr. Robin’s can also make key notes to have for himself during the orientation so he can be prepared prior to the training. Lastly, on issue and concern number six. ABC, Inc. must make arrangements to find a better way to coordinate the availability of the conference room or rooms. By not having arrangements in place for this, Carl currently does not have a place to hold orientation that is to take place on June 15th; due to the Technology Services Department holding training for the whole month of June. Whether the system that they choose be a calendar type paper based or web based, ABC, Inc. should have something in place so errors like these do not occur again. A recommendation of a web based calendar and have one person take control of it is suggested. III. PROPOSED COMPANY SOLUTIONS The proposed company solutions that should take place are: refer all applicants to the Human Resources Department and also for all new employees establish bimonthly or monthly start dates to coincide with the company’s pay periods. Have orientation manuals printed either by an in house copy person or have orientation manuals completed by an outside company. Lastly, ABC, Inc. must set up a calendar system for reserving the conference room and Carl needs to go ahead and reserve this room on a reoccurring basis. It will be easier to cancel the reserved room rather than to go scrambling looking for a room to hold orientation in. A web based calendar controlled by one person is what is recommended. Having upper management hold a meeting to discuss implementing the proposed solutions should be an additional step to take for all corporate management. CONCLUSION In conclusion, Carl Robins is an employee of ABC, Inc. and has been working for the company for just six months. He holds the position of Campus Recruiter and on his first recruitment hired 15 new trainees. Carl lacked supervision, knowledge and experience and was not ready for such a large task. He was missing applications and mandatory drug screenings that were needed to complete employee records. Carl also did not have proper completed orientation manuals. These issues led to a case study of Carl and ABC, Inc. and proposed solutions were recommended. The recommended solutions are as follows: 1. Refer all applicants to the Human Resources Department 2. All new employees to establish bimonthly/monthly start dates to coincide with pay periods 3. Orientation manuals to be printed in house or by outside company 4. The Debate Over Video Game Violence Essay -- Violent Video Games

Controversy surrounds almost every topic and has been around for centuries. Controversial topics usually involve different types of people that have two opposite points of view about a certain topic or idea. The widespread expansion of technology has allowed people all over the world to debate certain topics that they deem to have a correct understanding of. Unsurprisingly, the effect of video games on the human brain has been a controversy since video games were first released decades ago. Video games involve the use of body and mind, which causes the player to be "inside" of the game, and they can see the world through the eyes of the character of which they play. Some psychologists and other scientists suggest that violent video games can cause psychological disorders which can cause players to engage in violent behavior in real life. On the other hand, there have also been studies conducted that suggest violence in video games does not affect the brain in that kind of way. Peop le from both sides of the viewpoint bring up good arguments that support their claim and really brings into question our understanding of video games and the impact they have on our brains. These scientists have conducted experiments over the last couple decades but still don't have an answer to what the underlying cause of children and young adults to be violent in real life as a result of playing violent video games, or if it does at all.
